But they’re a damn sight better than the Irish! Still, here comes the latest from the cheese eaters: GPS tracking system will keep track of where Dutch drivers go and they’ll be charged 16 cents a mile. But it’s all to stop global warming, you see – new taxes are jut a byproduct. This idea is already being floated in the U.S. with, naturally, the western states of California, Oregon and Washington leading the way. Can Al Gore be far behind?

“But they’re a damn sight better than the Irish!”
Back that up you snake.
WTF…CF, have you lost your mind??
Don’t make me come over there!!!
Was your Mom a patient of Dr Ben’s?
If I was Gideon I’d be demanding a DNA
test.
Ah, Mickey me boy, the Fountains are a mongrel mix of French, Dutch and a dash of Irish to keep us humble, so they’re all fair game. But Ramale did deliver my two daughters, and I’m thinking of sending him Sarah’s tuition bill, just to see if he’ll pay it.
I think paying for what one uses is a very good idea.
Why should road use be any different?
I see a Huguenot with dashes of blarney (substitute jameson) fueling the prose….
your ever so-humble neighbor.
Make that 12yr old single malt please!
Mick, just so you’re clear, the Irish in us is Scotch (Protestant) Irish; Cromwell’s drunken soldiery as our pa used to call them.
Anthony, I assumed as much…I’ve known CF to have scotch in him quite often.
You make a common mistake, using the expression Scotch Irish.
Scotch is the drink.
Scot/Scottish/Scot Irish refer to the people.
Irish who drink scotch, like myself, are another breed who enjoy the occasional single malt.
Nothing like being a girl of Scotch-Irish Protestant descent and dating a boy of Irish Catholic heritage in school. Cheers.
And by the bye, what does a girl have to do to get past moderation around here? Or is it all moderated?
And to get back to the topic, I live in Oregon and they’ve, yes, bandied that per-mile tax around, supposedly in lieu of gas tax, but does anybody believe they’d cut out gas tax?
I wonder how long before rural folks, who probably have to drive farther to their grocery store than I have to drive to take my son to school, rise up and rebel.
The people will not rise up, there is nothing anyone can do, any more. People can make noise when they find the time, but the appointed (anointed?) feel that they know best for all and any hearing is only for show.
Anwyn-
How do they account for the fact that some cars are very fuel efficient and others, guzzlers? It doesn’t seem altogether fair if you drive a small light car the same number of miles as a heavy SUV.
KC, personally I think that’s part of the point–they’ve “educated” about as many as they can into driving light fuel-efficient cars, so now that that practice has cut their tax revenue, they’ll go to a model that allows them to make a larger amount of money.
