Bloomberg poll: Americans want government to “create” jobs by public works spending and job training, cut the deficit, and have “the rich” pay for it all. Only a public this ignorant could have elected Obama or wish Bush the spender back in Washington. Fear for our country.

I would rather the government pay people to actually do something useful (like fix roads and bridges) than to sit around idly living off welfare checks and food stamps. It costs the same either way, but one has a (small) benefit to society whereas the other doesn’t. Some hard work might also help a subset of the population lose some weight, which would bring our medical costs down too. I am serious about this – we spend a gazillion dollars on healthcare related to obesity – getting these fatties to lose even a modest amount of weight would cut medicaid spending considerably.
almost everyone wants the truly rich to pay more for government services. but the definition changes according to the voter. ‘rich’ should be understood to mean anyone with twice the assets or twice the earnings of the interviewed subject. just like here in greenwich, the obscene mcmansion is any house 50% larger than yours.
yeah, Bored, but when I see that the “Stimulus” jobs cost $231,000 each, I’m reminded that government doesn’t do anything cheaply or well. Cut off unemployment and welfare and let them go to work at real jobs.
Dude -
You don’t have a real job. Neither do I!!!!
So why should everyone else?
Your Pal,
Walt
I’d go hide somewhere, Chris. Just not sure where exactly I can go to do it.
Perhaps we’ll have to let a generation or two crash and burn – and hope that those to come can fix it all, somehow.
The very scary part is that I don’t know if it can get turned around in my lifetime.
Opinion of median is always a dangerous (but amusing) thing to extrapolate when such middle-aged “worker” earns ~$50K/yr and can barely read/count or balance a checkbook, let alone analyze macro-economy or own finances
All jobs aren’t created equal, nor are all taxpayers esp when top 1% pay ~50% of all taxes and bottom 40% pay almost no taxes
“Cut off unemployment and let them go to work at real jobs.”
Geez, CF, some of those people on unemployment are unemployed for the first time in their lives — 50- and 60-somethings who’ve worked hard since their twenties, contributing to the tax rolls, and now, after the rug has been pulled out from under them by companies who can get them cheaper or not at all, are getting by on savings, 401(k)s (if they’re worth anything), their kids’ college funds, and unemployment benefits they’ve already contributed to and you so disdain.
As for letting them go to work at real jobs, I’m sure every one of them would love to.
