This could be useful – train data for iPhone

Station Stops app released for $2.99. Train schedules, maps, etc., all from a local Greenwich blogger. I’m all for supporting local Greenwich bloggers!

This is the same app, but now version 2.0, that the MTA threatened to sue over last year, before coming to its senses. The guy took public information – train schedules – and put it into an app and apparently the MTA’s argument was, “wait a minute, that’s our information, and just because we couldn’t be bothered to make it easily available doesn’t mean someone else can!”. As I said, they came to their senses.

I’m not a commuter, thank God, but we do get a regular stream of visitors from the City, and I think this would be handy.

I know you like to poke fun at the Greenwich Time so I thought I would pass this along. In this article http://www.greenwichtime.com/local/article/Fire-brass-vows-to-press-on-despite-funding-483038.php the writer says “Members of Representative Town Meeting won’t be getting any firefighting schwag anytime soon after overwhelmingly denying full funding for a $23 million central fire station project because of questions about the scope and cost of the work.” I’m sure he meant “SWAG” or “stuff we all get” and not “schwag” which is slang for low grade marijuana. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=schwag

  2. Thanks for the mention Chris.

I just wanted to point out, as I have made a point on my blog ad nauseum, that MTA’s approach to this issue has completely reversed since Jay Walder was confirmed.

MTA, in cooperation with Google, has been providing exceptional support for outside developers for months now, culminating in a joint conference last week.

Having heard Walder speak on this topic, I can tell you he’s not just ‘level-headed’ about it – he has exceptional technical awareness and interest in this issue.

Here’s what he had to say about my conflict with MTA when he heard about it last year prior to his confirmation:

    Mr. Schoenfeld,
How does your app differ from the free Metro North Real Time app I have for my Blackberry?
