The Junior League kicks off the debutant season. At Conyers farm, surprisingly.
I know, this will just set off another round of angry postings, but really – how can you resist?

Por favor, amigos, ayuda nos.
Well, at least participants in the debutante drill don’t pretend they’re doing something that makes the world a better place. (THEIR world, yes; THE world, no.) Or did I miss a memo on this?
Absolutely correct – and I would never make fun of teen-aged girls just out to have a wonderful evening. i’m the father of two such girls, now just a little past that age, and one was invited to attend then and, to my astonishment, actually wanted to accept. My Tom Boy! And I would have been delighted to give her that experience, had we been able to afford it. But if you’ve priced college tuition lately ….
I hope the girls have a delightful, sweet time and I wish them only happiness.
It has always been a successful fundraiser for the Junior League. It benefits everyone involved. (whatever that agenda might be)
Angry rich people are funny.
CF, why not have your new friend Diane Terry sell them on your Lake Titicaca idea? It just might fly!
I’d like to see your Diane Perry in a ball gown. I have always enjoyed drag shows.
CF – you really want all the town blondes mad at you, don’t you?
Now, regardless of whether or not you think debutante balls are relics of a white male dominated past – the Junior League of Greenwich has done AMAZING things for this town. Surely you know that and Grump oughta know that. And it is not just upper crusty kind of stuff either. The JLG gets their hands dirty and gets the job done, probably better than anyone else in town. Kids in Crisis, Arch St. Skate Park, Safety Town – just to mention a few of the good things they, (we – GG is a proud member of this institution) have done. I would also like to mention that the debutantes are required to do a good chunk of community service right here in town, whether it is volunteering at Neighbor to Neighbor or reading to seniors, good works WILL be done. It is not just about pretty dresses and parties. “Not that there is anything wrong with that,” to quote Seinfeld…
No fault with this type of thing as there is so little magic left in life for young people.
Greenwich Gal at 4:14 — Oops, sorry, I did not intend any disrespect to the Junior League. Believe it or not, I hadn’t figured out that the link between the Junior League and a debutante event was fundraising. In fact, I couldn’t figure out how the Junior League got into the picture at all; in my limited experience, the debutante biz is either the province of a fearsome high-society cabal or else it is directly related to family membership in a club. So I am happy to be corrected.
Junior League/Conyers Farm. Enough said. Speaks volumes about both. Enough said.
I agree with Jack Martin that “let the young people have fun.” He’s 100% right that there is so little magic left in life for young people. It seems to me that it wouldn’t hurt our society to have a little more manners, also.
Agreed with Jack, and you. As I hope I’ve made clear, I’d have been delighted to provide my own daughter with a touch of this magic, had I been able to afford it. As for the Junior League referred to by several other readers, I’m fully aware of their good works, from Kids in Crisis to he Arch Street teen Center and so forth. Good people, doing good things. But it’s still hard not to tease this anachronism.
You posted the other comments I made today, but not my one about the results of my own coming out party, years ago….probably because it was in bad taste. I wondered where your threshold was, and I finally found it.
