More on the FDNY exam

The Village Voice – The Village Voice! – has a great article on why the Fireman exam has no racial content. My (few) liberal readers won’t believe me, but surely they’ll go to the source of all knowledge and report back. The judge in question is demanding that NYC hire black folks who can neither read nor think, but are er, black. The city is resisting. I’m with the city on this one.

These few civil service exam situations are only the smallest part of the problem created by the disparate impact legal theory. The far greater damage was the increase in teenage unemployment. Before disparate impact it was common for a high school dropout to get a decent private sector job by taking and passing a simple proficiency test. Employers understanably ended these tests after disparate impact, and teen unemployment soared.

Thanks, I’ve been looking for a link to the actual exam. It’s not exactly what I’ve been looking for but it’s a start and has more links.

What a horrible outcome for those future firefighters who’d thought they were close to being hired and are now considered too old to reapply.
