In 1979, I was on a sailboat in waters off Panama, I think on the Atlantic side of the canal, and while relaxing up top of the mat, looked down and saw a huge whale shark…the rest of the people on the boat didn’t notice it hanging around and following the boat, seeming curious about the dinghy that was trailing the boat. I yelled down to everyone and we had a thrilling time observing it for a long time….not sure what it was and if it was dangerous or not. After it finally left we found the identification information in a book that was on board of the boat. it remains a highlight of my life..days when I was invited to go sailing on a sailboat down there….exploring islands…..seeing animals like that whale shark up close and in their own environment, and them seeming curious and unafraid of us….
Life hasn’t been that exciting or carefree for a long, long time…
Oh, to be young and adventurous again….maybe someday things like that will happen again … I hope god is kind and leaves me with health and the ability to be adventurous again when I hit my golden years.
I can’t believe things like that used to happen to me. I was very lucky and didn’t know it. Your daughter seems to be having wonderful, exploring years now too.
Grab it while you can, Peeps. I was busy planning an Elk hunt in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming and suddenly find I can’t climb a flight of stairs. I hope to return to something resembling my 20-year-old mountaineering self, but I have my doubts.
Looks like a whale shark. Filter feeder. Harmless. Must have been awesome to see up close in person.
Would you by any chance know where Uncle Walter, Madam “Nouveau Climber” and “The Fillies” are hiding?
That’s what I thought, PJ, but still, I’d have been nervous if i were that kayaker. “I think that’s a whale shark, so i think I’m allright, but …”
Not a whale shark, doesn’t have the distinctive markings.
Probably a basking shark.
Not whale, looks like a basking shark. Just as harmless.
Is that a shark, or our tax collector? But then again, that’s redundant.
“I think that’s a whale shark, so i think I’m allright, but …I think I just soiled my shorty wetsuit”
In another interview, it says he jumped in the water to swim with it!
