Perhaps more ironic was the U.N.’s choice of Iran & Sa’udi Arabiyya to serve on its Women’s Rights Board. Iran was ultimately blocked. SA has a seat. http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/11/10/iran_blocked_but_saudi_arabia_accepted_for_un_women_board

Just to nit-pick . . .

The UN did not name the North Korean . . . the UN did not choose Saudi Arabia . . .

The bodies in question are gatherings of diplomats who work for their own governments, not the United Nations. The diplomats are the ones who make the appointments (generally there must be some semblance of geographic balance is a group; or a leadership role rotates on a geographic basis over time . . . with much “negotiation” on top of that).
