Well fair enough, we’re ignoring the same advice

New York City residents won’t heed Mayor Bloomberg’s call to evacuate. Greenwich is trying the same thing, but we’re stupid and stubborn. My Ma received one of those reverse 911 calls while I was out and she was no more inclined to move than I would have been.

  1. As the saying goes: “You can a tell a New Yorker right away, but you can’t tell him much.”

The last television transmission I saw at the height of hurricane Gloria (1985) as it was passing over Greenwich was of that dumbbell Chuck Scarborough announcing, very solemnly, that (then) Governor William O’Neil had just ordered that the entire town of Greenwich be evacuated. Then the TV went dead as the winds whipped up and a large tree tipped over in front of my house. Evacuate now? There never was any such order, and that imbecile Scarborough should have been fired for making that false announcement at the height of the storm. It was very chilling for my family to hear that just before being cut off by the storm from any further broadcasts.

Lesson learned: Don’t take seriously the broadcasting blabbermouths during a weather (or any other) crisis. They, for the most part, are just hyping their story and don’t know (or care) what they’re talking about.

@Sound Beacher, it sounds like Bernie wants Stevie to keep him company. :D

Yet all these non-heeders agree that if they made a bad decision, nobody will help them afterwards, or only after the needs of those who acted in accordance with precautionary measures are covered, right ? What with the land of free will and self-reliance.

    Are you evacuating CF?

re the storm… i have filled and placed 40 sandbags, backed by plastic lawn bags, at the bottom of doors facing the creek, in case it rises more than 5 feet [to the bottom of the door] but less than 6 ft [to the top of the sandbags. what chances is there that it happens just this way? but many might not know of the sand and bags available at the back of the firestation. just might make a difference. you need to bring your own shovel.

Iam: I’d love to hear the non-heeders crow about “personal responsibility” when a town rescue crew refuses to come and get them.

And anybody who plays fast and loose and has a child, elderly person, or other dependent in their care is a selfish ass.

People are being told to evacuate all over Brooklyn, but many are staying put. Just use common sense — if you live in a basement apartment and can see the water from your house, you’re an idiot if you stay. If you’re on high ground and are an able-bodied person, wait it out. The weathermen live for these storms so I’m guessing (hoping) it’s being over-hyped, but we’ll see tonight…

    Yep use (good ) judgement.

So when the nice policeman is very insistent you leave, and you refuse, and he then hands you as sharpie and asks to you label your core asnd extremities with your SSN; you might wish to reconsider your judgement.

  11. Come on, it was a. kid from ghs, not a cop, and this a Cat One or a tropical storm, not Katrina. You have to make your own risk assessments in life and, so far, I’ve done ok. I’m not stupid, but that cuts both ways.
