I haven’t watched the Olympics since they gave the Russian basketball players three extra tries, but this is even worse

Chinese girl beats her own previous record by five (!) seconds and is now the fastest swimmer in the world, male or female. The gymnast refs also threw a match to Japan, but that’s pretty much par for whatever these events are pretending to be. Aside from Walt’s appreciation of the women’s volleyball players’ uniforms, why does anyone watch this crap?

Sometimes life’s not fair but doesn’t mean you have to be a quitter. Thanks to all the athletes for their hard work, dedication and congrats on realizing your dreams.

    • Competing against hopped-up fakes is not only “not fair”, it’s pointless, just like the Olympics. It’s about politics, corrupt officials and drugs. I can get that in the real world and have no need to join in the pretense that there’s something the least bit noble about the Olympics.

That summary of her result isn’t quite accurate (it’s rather that her final two-lap push was about as fast as Lochte’s, not her entire race). Still quite surprising, though.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that doping is widespread in the Olympics and other sports. Even where testing is common, the athletes and their trainers are usually several steps ahead of the detection techniques. I can come to terms with it because watching these amped up, pumped up machines is fun, even if it is rather divorced from a person’s health and wellbeing at times.

Still, it’s interesting to wonder what the late 19th century founders of the modern Olympics would think of today’s drug-happy, massively commercialized Games. Let alone people involved with the ancient Olympics.

The Olympics and the UN are similarly irrelevant.

Somebody call Lance Armstrong. He’ll know what’s going on.
