CC, did you happen to see the story that was finally released about a month ago detailing how, at the height of the Cold War, the US and the Brits, using a super-quiet British sub, snuck up behind a USSR sub and from no more than 30 feet away snipped the cable that held a new, ultra-secret Russian listening device, and then retrieved it? The snipping was done so as to make the break look like the cable had worn through, rather than having been cut, so as not to alert the rightful owners what had happened. Fascinating.
I think that sub was from Poland. It had a screen door.

Just found the story and posted it – great story, however it was done, but I do believe you’re the more careful reader.
More curious is that whenever defense cuts rear their head, suddenly we’re under attack from the russkies, chinamen or whoever is the latest bogeyman. One sub, big deal. Does anyone think russkies can mount a sustained attack on anyone, except maybe Lithuanaia?

Was actually an interesting part of the Himes/Obsitnik debate. Himes claiming that China was our “frenemy” and wouldn’t threaten us. Obsitnik drawing on his Navy background to talk about the Chinese submarine build up and attempt to dominate that area.
