Mencken called the election, 96 years ago

We’re screwed

“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.”

H.L. Mencken, 1916

I also like this one:

The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can’t get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods.

Interesting development with the Petraeus resignation. Notably, he’s scheduled to receive a “Patriot Award” tonight at a benefit for military families to be held at the Riverside Yacht Club (his wife Holly is a board member of the group). Wonder if that will still happen?

Bill Clinton: Wag the Dog, and use a military action to cover for a botched extra-marital sex scandal.
Barack Hussein Soetoro Obama: Pull a known for a long time sex scandal out of the closet to cover for a botched non-military action and foreign affairs fiasco.

  3. Seems stupid as hell to me that a man is forced to resign over an affair??!! Is an affair supposed to indicate that he is incapable making good choices? Look at all The sextapades Clinton got away with as president – JFK too, yet each managed to keep their political reputations intact. Why should Petraeus be any different. No one would argue his talent as a general. I think Obama should have refused his resignation. And who is to say his wife might not forgive him?
The funniest part of this “scandal” is the name of the book penned by his paramour. All In. 😀

Im think he’s toast to prevent him from testifying on Benghazi next week…what do you think?

The Socialist Party, that is, the Democrats, are the party of Santa Claus. The Republicans want to kill Santa off and make us pay our own way. They are the Scrooge Party. Does it require political genius to figure out who’ll win an election when we are promised a bag full of toys that someone else will pay for? Yippee for the Santa Party! Let’s get all we can before Mommy and Daddy get the credit card bill.

What is this the fourth or fifth flag officer(General/Admiral) to be fired/retired since 9-11-12.

  7. I have been quoting him, too, though I don’t want to believe it: “It is impossible to underestimate the intelligence of the average American.”

Thanks for digging up Menken at at time like this… (1920) The American of today, in fact, probably enjoys less personal liberty than any other man of Christendom, and even his political liberty is fast succumbing to the new dogma that certain theories of government are virtuous and lawful, and others abhorrent and felonious.
