A chart from AJ

My only complaint: doesn’t show the 23,000 – 36,000 flu deaths each year. Link to chart here. Check out tobacco, with its 529,000 deaths. Maybe the NRA should cut a deal with the government: guns and ammo will be taxed as heavily and the government will sit back, collect the loot and leave us alone. Works for the leaf growers. And booze.

Lots of “unintentional” deaths. What the hell is an unintentional injury or fall? No one intends to do either, unless this statistic is meant to reflect suicides or unsolved homicides.

    • You’re almost there. “Unintentional deaths” are what used to be called accidents, before bureaucrats got involved. An intentional death would indeed be a suicide.

Yup LA, that one’s been floating around for a while, but here’s one I saw fresh today, which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fresh but neither is that carbon monoxide treated meat you’re buying at the supermarket:

‘Do penalties for smokers and the obese make sense?’

“…Annual health care costs are roughly $96 billion for smokers and $147 billion for the obese, the government says. These costs accompany sometimes heroic attempts to prolong lives, including surgery, chemotherapy and other measures.

But despite these rescue attempts, smokers tend to die 10 years earlier on average, and the obese die five to 12 years prematurely, according to various researchers’ estimates….”

So it looks like the fatties are costing more than the smokers, but then stuffing your face with goodies is so much more fun than smoking cigarettes. But on the subject of flu, it looks like Piers Morgan has stepped in it again:

I think tobacco is purposely inflated. If an 83 year old smoker dies, it will be listed under tobacco. In reality, he died from being 83 years old.

For those of you who would like to see the registration of guns, the cost of the long gun (rifles, shotguns) registry in Canada: ” The net annual operating cost of the program, originally estimated to be $2 million, is reported to be $66.4 million for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.[1]
Canada has around 34.4 million people, a little over 2 million more than the tri-state area. The current Conserative government ended the long gun registry and destroyed the list of gun owners names. Quebec has filed a temporary injunction from preventing the list of Quebec long gun owners from being destroyed.

‘Obamacare’ to hit smokers with huge penalties

Smokers, beware: tobacco penalties under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act could subject millions of smokers to fees costing thousands of dollars, making healthcare more expensive for them than Americans with other unhealthy habits.
The Affordable Care Act, which critics have also called “Obamacare”, could subject smokers to premiums that are 50 percent higher than usual, starting next Jan 1. Health insurers will be allowed to charge smokers penalties that overweight Americans or those with other health conditions would not be subjected to.
A 60-year-old smoker could pay penalties as high as $5,100, in addition to the premiums, the Associated Press reports. A 55-year-old smoker’s penalty could reach $4,250. The older a smoker is, the higher the penalty will be.

  7. You know Obama will never allow people to not get the healthcare they need and want. When smokers can’t afford this premium, who do you think will pick up the tab?

My recollection of the way these things are counted is that if you smoke two cigarettes a day and eat five Big Macs a day and then die your death is blamed on tobacco, not a surfeit of fast food. But it makes the anti-smokers feel better.

The World Health Organization, WHO, did and epidemiological study on the effects of second hand smoke and found that their was no risk. There was such and uproar from the PC crowd that the WHO changed the results. That’s how science should work. When you get a result that contradicts your firmist beliefs, don’t even bother changing the science, just rewrite the results.

“The World Health Organization’s first study on SHS is a textbook example of the right way to conduct an epidemiological study. Unfortunately for them, it yielded unexpected results. They responded by doing a second one, a meta-analysis, that allowed them to extract the results they wanted. This is an analysis of their first study. …

….Fact: The RR for exposure during childhood was 0.78, with a CI of .64 – .96. This indicates a protective effect! Children exposed to ETS in the home during childhood are 22% less likely to get lung cancer, according to this study. Note that this was the only result in the study that did not include 1.0 in the CI.

The WHO quickly buried the report. The British press got wind of it and hounded them for weeks.

Fact: On March 8, 1998, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported “The world’s leading health organization has withheld from publication a study which shows that not only might there be no link between passive smoking and lung cancer but that it could have even a protective effect.”

Finally, the WHO issued a press release. Although their study showed no statistically significant risk from ETS, their press release had the misleading headline “Passive Smoking Does Cause Lung Cancer – Do Not Let Them Fool You.” (I say “misleading” because it would be impolite to call it an outright lie.) …”
