Brace yourself, Bridget

UPDATE: Greenwich Time thoughtfully provides a chart showing the number of Food Stamp recipients in each Connecticut town.  From its headline: “The Great Divide”, the editors apparently intend to show that Greenwich has fewer welfare types than other towns. The real story is the increase in food stamp persons here in town compared to other cities: our rate is soaring as theirs remain steady. Must be the opportunity to encounter Regis Philbin at CVS that’s drawing them here, eh?

Not arguing with your general sentiment . . . but a quick look at the numbers, and we are not “soaring” compared with other towns. Our rate of growth still looks lower than most others. Not that that makes it a good thing.

Looks like the average increase is about 10 percent.
Still love what one of your readers added on this national issue about a week or so ago….
    Read something like this:

    A Lesson In Irony…

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us “Please Do Not Feed the Animals.” Their stated reason for the policy is because “The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.”

Thus ends today’s lesson in irony…
