NPR this afternoon announced that Barak Obama had named a “key figure in his administration”. Turns out it was Bill Richardson, appointed to be our next Commerce Secretary. I’m sure that Governor Richardson is a fine man and our country will be well served by him but “Commerce Secretary” and “key figure” seem to me to be mutually exclusive terms. Can you name our current Commerce Secretary? Without Googling? I can’t.

Do you think Bush knows who his Commerce Secretary is?

That’s a big part of the problem, what has Carlos Miguel Gutierrez been doing for the past 4 years.

Yes, I had to google him too.

Well I had to Google the Secretary during Clinton’s administration. I do remember Ron Brown because he died in a plane crash but the only thing I could find about his successor was this notable achievement:
“Commerce Secretary Michael Kantor announced today the appointment of 21 members to eight regional fishery management councils that work in partnership with the federal government to manage the nation’s marine fishery resources.”

Doesn’t sound like a “key” appointment to me!
