Somali’s bomb plot

Look: I certainly wish no ill on Oregon residents, and I’m delighted that Corvallis residents weren’t blown to bits yesterday at their Christmas tree lighting ceremony, but if anyone was asking for death and destruction, it was this liberal mayor and his constituents.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams said today that he didn’t know about the investigation into a plot to detonate a bomb at the tree-lighting ceremony at Pioneer Courthouse Square last night.Adams said he would have been notified if the bomb had been live.

“I did not know about it until 9:15 p.m. last night when I was asked to go to the FBI headquarters in Portland for a briefing,” said the mayor, who also serves as police commissioner.

He said it was the same protocol followed by former Mayor Vera Katz when he served as her chief of staff.

“On these international terrorism investigations, it’s top secret, limited to select law enforcement circles,” Adams said. “That’s under direct order of Washington, D.C.”

In 2005, the city council voted to end Portland’s involvement in the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Adams said the city still operates under the agreement reached with federal authorities at that time. He stressed that he has much more faith in the Obama administration and the leadership of the U.S. Attorney’s office now than he did in 2005.

Adams said the partnership is working well.

The bombing plot was “very unnerving,” he said. “It came as a shock to me, as I’m sure it did for most Portlanders,”

He said it was a “reminder that we are not an oasis with a wall around us. We work hard to have a free and open local community, but it’s a reminder that part of us must always be vigilant to prevent people from abusing those values of openness.”

The mayor said that he had “trust in Portlanders’ sense of fairness” in dealing with the alleged Somali plotter.

“Bad actions by one member of any group does not and should not be generalized or applied more widely to other members of that same group,” he said. “Otherwise, as the biggest racial group in Portland, we European-Americans would be in deep trouble.”

Adams said he and Commissioner Amanda Fritz and Police Chief Mike Reese will be doing outreach to leadership in the Somali community.

UPDATE: What I said (yesterday). Washington Examiner :political correctness almost doomed Portland.

    Outreach.
    Beautiful. Just beautiful.

Chris, here’s the part of these stories you claim to want but never find:

Muslims in the Portland area decried the alleged plot at a Saturday news conference.

“We condemn strongly any act of violence that would target innocent people,” said Imam Mikal Shabazz of the Oregon Islamic Chaplain Organization. “We condemn the alleged actions that were thwarted last night.”

Another leader thanked local police and the community for outreach to and protection of area mosques.

“Things like this really set us back,” said Shahriar Ahmed of Bilal Mosque in Beaverton.

Khalid Luqman of Muslims for Peace spent Saturday handing out information to Portland passers-by.

“We need to show the world that Islam can co-exist with the rest of the world peacefully,” he said.

This is the full article. You put the mayor’s promise to do outreach with the Somali community in bold, I think to mock it. I really wonder if you think collective punishment is a better policy than working hand-in-hand with the great moderate majority of American Muslims.

JRH – hear, hear! Thank you for highlighting the full context, versus selective presentations.

Outreach? How about giving Adams and his administration one way tramp steamer tickets to Mogadishu?

  5. Chris

So that is why they have people like that low-class veiled muslim woman working at Costco/Norwalk branch.

  6. Guys named Mohammed, etc., have created a hell of a PR problem for themselves.

Chris, you are the best in highlighting the facts, unlike others who focus on highlighting bull shit that serves nothing but distraction.

    JRH,

Last night on the news I saw an interview with the Iman at the mosque on OSU campus where this idiot went to school. The Iman said with a straight face that the kid (who attended the mosque) never once showed radical tendencies. Yeah right, the kid, through his pronouncements, made campus security so aware of him they told the FBI but I’m supposed to believe he never said anything suspicious while in the mosque. Sorry I don’t buy it…

Now I am not suggesting that the Iman (or mosque) was involved. Only that it is very hard to belief the Iman was “policing” his flock given the public pronouncements of this kid. There had to have been signs and as far as I know the Iman did not play a part in telling the authorities about the kid.

Reading some of CF’s posts and many of the comments on this blog make me very worried and sad about moving back to the U.S. I’m scared for myself and my children if this we are going to confront this kind of ignorance and prejudice in Greenwich.

    • Anonymous, it’s the ignorance and prejudice in places like Portland, Oregon that should have you worried. Notice my post: it didn’t pluralize Somalis, it said, “Somali’s”. Big difference. In the meantime, the wonderfully trusting citizens of Portland voluntarily removed themselves from the federal anti-terrorism task force because they, unlike the racist white folks in the other parts of the country, would never offend Muslims and therefore were immune from terrorist attacks. Ha ha ha.

    Retired IB’er @12:01pm:

You make an excellent point. What did you expect from the Imam? Do you think our HLS or the FBI should put any faith in what the Imams are telling them? or trust the bull shit given to them by the group of muslims (and veiled muslims) they hired to help them “make our America safe”?

What are the chances that those guys are not sympathizers? What are the chances that those guys are just bunch of people who are just interested in making money for doing nothing? … and just to demonstrate some loyalty, they give us some bull shit opinions.

    R. IB’er, so do you feel better now approving the construction of mosques on ground zero in Manhattan?

  12. Joe

Chris at 9:17am, you must be talking about the tall skinny cup-size 32A veiled woman at Costco/Norwalk.

    Joe,

Mosques do not blow people up last time I checked. Nor does the location of a mosque have much impact on the people that do the blowing up… they have these pesky things called feet.

So on this issue of locating a mosque at ground zero, while I do not think it appropriate or the smart thing to do, I still feel we should not abandon our principles for what is an issue of pure symbolism of where a mosque is located.

    • IB’R, don’t you get the sense that the guy behind all this is a blowhard? He may yet get financing from Saudis or some-such-group, but from what I can tell, he doesn’t have a dime himself. I think he’s all hat, no cattle.

  14. Retired IB'er

    CF,
Not sure who you mean… the OR guy or the NYC mosque guy.

Assuming NYC mosque guy, no doubt he’s getting funding from some deep pocket Arab.

It will be interesting to find out who set the fire in the office that was reported at 2:15 a.m.
