If Malloy wants other people’s money to fund rebuilding the New York-Boston corridor, I know where he can find it

Danno is hoping to glom onto Florida’s share of railroad money now that that that state has rejected it. Why not kill the railroad to nowhere and redirect funds from the New Haven – Hartford line to where there is a demand? Why is this so difficult to understand?

    This is fantastic news, and a master move by Dan. Just the kind of forward thinking that we knew we’d get in electing him. This will put a real hurting on the penny-wise and pound foolish GOP governors (Christie and Scott and Walker) whose mid-20th Century view of urban transportation is completely out of touch with economic and environmental realities.

    Go for it Dan! In a world of higher and higher oil prices and environmental decay, high speed rail is the way to go. Stop subsidizing Mideast dictators with our reliance on foreign oil. The Europeans are way ahead of us on high speed rail, as they are on health care and management-union relations, so it’s time we caught up, before we sink to 3rd world status.

    well, NY to boston ‘corridor’ also goes by way of new haven -> springfield -> boston. it’s referred to as the ‘inland route’.

    the ‘shore line’ route is by way of providence.

    we think it’s important to have both corridors viable.

    It’s difficult to understand because despite Fairfield County origins, once a man gets to Hartford, he quickly comes to see Fairfield County as a taxable part of New York, and to act accordingly (see Weicker, Lowell). We provide a disproportionate share of the state’s revenue, and receive an inversely proportional share of the benefits.

    The mania for high speed rail to nowhere in lieu of low speed rail where there are actual commuters is delusional, uneconomic, and an insult to taxpayers and voters alike. That this fetish is worshiped where there is a clear and unmet need for actual mass transit is all the more insane.

    once oil hits 150-200/barrel , we’ll all be wishing we had reliable rail transport.

    High speed rail for the 50 mile New Haven – Hartford corridor that already has I-95? When only a few very heavily used passenger rail lines anywhere in the world cover operating costs, let alone construction/upgrade costs. What could go wrong? Nothing except that Connecticut taxpayers will be on the hook for the operating subsidy. Madness.

  8. 200 mile an hour trains to go from Greenwich to Norwalk? That’s productive.

    On the other hand, if these ‘high-speed’ trains are used by Connecticut residents to move quickly out of state, then it might make some sense.

    • Greg, if they could run a train from NYC to Boston at 200 mph ( a doubtful prospect, given the condition and the layout of the track), then I could at least see the theoretical advantage of such a plan – we could divert traffic off I-95 and from LaGuardia. That’s a big if and I doubt it would make economic sense anyway, but compared to spending billions shuffling five old homeless men from New Haven to Hartford, it’s a no-brainer.

    To Boston one takes 95 (or merit) to 91 to 84 to 90.

    91 runs from new haven to Hartford.

    Amtrak did toss out a plan (link) for true high speed rail in the northeast corridor, but it doesn’t give all that much love to Fairfield County. They figured, as you do, that it’s not possible to achieve high speed on the New Haven line, so their idea is to bypass it altogether. I have to say that it would mean interesting things for real estate in other parts of the state – if I recall, it would reduce the Hartford-NY trip length to an hour, and Danbury-NY would take about as long as Greenwich-NY today.

    Improving the rail bed and finishing the NJ railway tunnel could also signal the return of freight trains and lessen the long haul truck traffic choking the I 95 corridor.
