“Prisons are made for people like you”. Judge sentencing a 26-year-old to 100 years for setting his wife and son on fire.

Maybe I’m just getting old, but I don’t remember as many crazy-violent cases like this from decades past. There are always sickos, I know that, but lately so many stories about people killing their children – lord, go kill yourself if you are so angry at the world, not the kids. What’s the matter with this world today?
EOS, I’m half a generation behind you and I never heard of anything like this as a kid either. :(
The worst thing I knew as a kid was that a friend’s younger brother died of leukemia when he was 9 and that was awful.
P.S. I didn’t want to post this at your blog since you’ve steered clear of the topic and I was very late to hear of it, but I was very sad to learn about your son’s injuries. You, your son, and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I was happy to read that he appears to be able to have a full recovery though. I’m so sorry for your troubles.
I’m very sorry if I agitated you on your own blog. :( I meant no ill will.
EOS, we have created three new generations of desensitized sickos towards violence; generation X, Y and the millennials.
I’m not for banning violent movies, tv, video games, etc, but I do feel this is the tradeoff.
While I’m on the subject, I do wish tv would exercise more discretion in the appropriateness of tv commercials – including the promotion of new tv shows, for all televised sports and for any educational programming. I enjoy watching select sporting events with my kids and the many amazing wildlife and science shows on cable these days. I find them very effective and fun tools for learning, particular if I watch with them to expand on the subject and to provide additional appreciation. It’s a little fustrating when I have to hit pause to prevent a commercial for Saw V or a SVU NY with some woman screaming.
As I’m sure others will note, it is the gallows that were meant for people like him.
I think that some of the issue with the sickos and how many of them are committing horrific acts like this has to do with the Internet. I’m not so sure that there are really many more today than in years past… or that we can easily read about them today, from all corners of the world. In days gone by without the Internet, ignorance truly was bliss!
I’m not sure I think it’s the internet Peg. Or the video games or the TV shows. Personally, and I might be in the minority, I think adults act out when there’s been lack of parental affection when they were children. Hugs and gentle words goes such a long way in defining a child’s moral compass. A family can be dirt poor but grow up with a sense of pride that they belong and are cared for if the unit is cohesive and happy. But sadly, I think so few people are happy today – rich and poor, that I see our world is sinking deeper and deeper into an emotional abyss.
EOS – You are in effect asking the age old question about heredity and enviroment. And the answer is always — both, but who knows to what extent in each individual case? Why does exactly the same gene pool and enviroment produce a Whitey and William Bolger? If you watch some of the prison shows on MSNBC the conclusion is inescapable that many of these inmates are natural born stone cold sociopaths totally devoid of any and all human emotion or empathy. Some people are simply hard wired not to play well with others.
Yes, Inagua, I know that, and those stone cold sociopaths can’t be hugged to being nice but I look around me at all the children who come to visit their mothers at the women’s prison in Bedford Hills (where I volunteer)…they are STARVED for affection. Starved. Their eyes are empty.
For every Bulger good v. bad brother, there are a million kids who want to be good if they only had the touch of a loving hand or the hug from a mom or dad on a daily basis. We’ve become a world too busy to understand the basics of love and tenderness. I don’t let a day go by without telling Mr. EOS I adore him. I add a gentle touch to his shoulder or back and when he’s grumpy or exhausted from work, he stops and smiles. Touching changes people’s demeanor completely. Words are words and people tune them out, good and bad. But hugs or a touch last a lifetime. Children must have that reinforcement for half a chance in this world.
EOS – I understand and agree with everything you say, especially about affection starved children. And I can totally understand why Mr. EOS is a very lucky husband. Your post touched me because I can remember like yesterday the first and only time a woman told me she adored me. I was 42 and she was a married woman I was cheating with. I like to think she meant it, and it made me feel absolutely wonderful, almost like Sally Field accepting an Oscar.
Inagua – I hope you have someone now.
GG – After enjoying the company of many women for about 45 years, I let my last girlfriend go about 1-1/2 years ago, and haven’t dated since. I am 65, probably have low testosterone, and am not interested in trying the blue pill. My dating days are done.
Inagua, i’ll be 58 this month and after almost 8 years of being out of the game, I’d have to say I agree with you. Which is funny – it all seemed so important years ago and now …? A simpler life is so much more attractive.
Inagua: Bah humbug Inagua. At 65, you are in your prime. Who gives a darn about low testosterone; any woman of substance won’t care, and there are creative ways to work around that issue, if I’m not mistaken!! :-) [See EOS blush]
Get back out there, and find another partner. Otherwise, I may come out there and bop you on the head. Who knows, the next one might be THE someone to tell you she adores you.
CF: Simpler isn’t always happier. Being married or in a serious relationship requires effort but when you are rewarded by someone in return who shares your values, sense of humor, and just those days when saying nothing is enough, that’s when it’s all worthwhile.
