When something can’t continue …

We’ll end up looking like Spain. Welfare state run amok.

The original purpose of Medicaid was to provide improved healthcare access for poor people, while not turning the safety net into a trap. Under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, Medicaid will be greatly expanded beyond what Congress originally intended.

In fact, as these charts show, it has already expanded beyond what Congress surely originally envisioned and, in the process, has created a terrible fiscal problem for the United States. (These charts and graphics come from a briefing today here at AEI, conducted by Gary Alexander, secretary of public welfare for Pennsylvania.)

A few scary factoids:

– In the 1960s, there were 18 workers per Medicaid recipient. Today that number is 2.5.

– The number of Americans on disability has risen 19% faster than jobs created during this recovery.

– There are just 1.2 private sector workers per 1 person on welfare or working for government.

– There are now just 1.65 employed persons in private sector per 1 person on welfare assistance.

Problem is: too many Americans WANT to be on disability or food stamps or some government help program. The Obama campaign works hard to market this to his base, in the poorest states. Why work when you can get something for nothing, at the expense of the evil rich? It’s a sick sick sick mentality that has to go away.

That scares the crap out of me. We are in a free-fall, but it aint free.

Nancy Pelosi claimed, “It is the biggest bang for the buck when you do food stamps and unemployment insurance.”

Damn it CF, none of your factoids matter, what matters is fairness and fairness means i’m taking your cow and your chicken.

You have to admit, the Dems are geniuses in that they have created a solid voting bloc with their programs of dependency and redistribution.

The stats are sobering. But, for goodness sake, what’s with bringing Obama’s name into this? You think it started with Obama? It’s been developing since the 60s. If seemingly sensible people cannot look at this huge problem even somewhat objectively, that’s when there is no hope!

    • People have been screaming about this since at least the beginning of “The Great Society”, warning that we were headed for exactly where we are now. Those Cassandras were dismissed as reactionary idiots who didn’t understand the genius of spending our way to prosperity for all.
So no, Obama is not solely to blame for this pending disaster, but he’s accelerating our doom.

Spain’s predicament has nothing to do with a welfare state run amok. It had to do with the bursting of a housing bubble, and the jobs lost as a result. The austerity being imposed on its people will not bring about prosperity, but just more pointless pain and suffering. Which is come to think of it is perhaps the whole point of why CF’s “cuddly” banker pals are pushing this utterly misguided policy .

There is nothing wrong with social security, disability and medicare that can not be fixed by means testing at death. Medicaid and food stamps are another matter. Bad policies can be corrected. It has happened in Sweden, Chile, New Zealand, and Canada, among others. But America has probably another 15 years to go before the need for reform seeps into the public consciousness.
