Carter, Bush, Al Gore – who says it’s prejudice and not experience?

One simply does NOT say "y'all, Lovey - it's just not done"

One simply does NOT say “y’all, Lovey, unless referring to a ship – please!”

Study: Children associate southern accents with stupidity as early as five.

According to a new study by psychology professors Katherine Kinzler and Jasmine DeJesus, children display such biases as early as age five, and it leads them to make associations linking Northern accents with being ‘smarter’ and ‘in charge’ and Southern accents with being ‘nice.’

Northern kids just catch on early.

And here I thought it was marrying your cousins and leaving pickup trucks in the front yard up on blocks that gave it away.

    • Even in Cos Cob, marrying your cousin is entirely appropriate, expected, even. Here in the north, we draw the line at one’s sister (unless she’s really, really pretty).

  2. hmmm

and what do children associate boston accents with? super super stupid?

that by far is the worst accent..

  3. hmmm

the researchers brought in people from tennessee and chicago? which part of chicago because I could probably find people from a part of chicago that sound stupid. i could even bring in folks from glaaaahster and we can redo the study…complete garbage

what do kids infer about folks who speak ebonics?

  5. But it’s true! Remember Al Franken imitating Phil Gramm? “I failed the 4th, 7th, and 9th grade.” Hilarious. And I am from Chicago and I resemble some of these comments!

Sorry – but when I hear a deep, strong and courtly Southern drawl from the cockpit, I feel instantly like I am in good hands.

    • Al Dente

      I agree, GG.
On the other hand, I had a pilot once who sounded like Abdul al Kaboom. I took all the clothing in my carry-on and spent the flight sewing them together into a makeshift parachute. I also cried.

Nothing like a few good ‘ol Muslim stereotypes from our well-informed Greenwich housewives…

    • I suggest that the stereotyping is yours, Gov – you posit a vast majority of Muslims as a peaceful, loving group of “Can’t we all get along” Rodney Kings when in fact those are a vanishingly small percentage – the Koran itself calls for the forced conversion or murder of infidels, the execution of apostates and hatred of Jews. Stereotypes must be false to be stereotypes, and that’s where your vision of the religion fist in.

Well if you want to literally interpret religious texts I stole this from google:
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet.” (1 Timothy 2:12)
“Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.” (1 Samuel 15:3)
“You shall not let a sorceress live.” (Exodus 22:18)
“Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock.” (Psalm 137:9)
“When the men would not listen to his host, the husband seized his concubine and thrust her outside to them. They had relations with her and abused her all night until the following dawn, when they let her go. Then at daybreak the woman came and collapsed at the entrance of the house in which her husband was a guest, where she lay until the morning. When her husband rose that day and opened the door of the house to start out again on his journey, there lay the woman, his concubine, at the entrance of the house with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, ‘Come, let us go’; but there was no answer. So the man placed her on an ass and started out again for home.” (Judges 19:25-28)
“And the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity.” (Romans 1:27)
“Jephthah made a vow to the Lord. ‘If you deliver the Ammonites into my power,’ he said, ‘whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites shall belong to the Lord. I shall offer him up as a holocaust.’ … When Jephthah returned to his house in Mizpah, it was his daughter who came forth, playing the tambourines and dancing. She was an only child: he had neither son nor daughter besides her. When he saw her, he rent his garments and said, ‘Alas, daughter, you have struck me down and brought calamity upon me. For I have made a vow to the Lord and I cannot retract’.” (Judges 11:30-1, 34-5)
“Then God said: ‘Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you’.”(Genesis 22:2)
“Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:22)
“Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse.” (1 Peter 2:18)

        • The difference, as I see it, is that most of the Old Testament prophets are gone and most of us are eating shrimp these days, while the Muslim world is actively practicing what their guy preached: beheadings of school girls, forbidding women from engaging in public life, barring the importation of bibles into their lands, etc. Try this out: make two videos, one mocking Christ, the other mocking Mohamed and post them both on YouTube with your home address supplied. See who shows up at your door to kill you.
(Another thought) – try this one, next time you’re at the airport, look for an old lady in a wheelchair traveling with her family, with a three-year-old grand child beside her, then look for three arab-types, clean shaven, sweating and fidgeting – which one do you think might pose a security threat? If you say, “strip search granny” then congratulations- you’re qualified to be a TSA agent.

      • The Governor

That is an interesting analysis of the Koran, Chris. Nothing stereotypical about that ignorant and fictitious interpretation by a republican small town boy. My comment was aimed at the Greenwich housewives that don’t get out much, which i guess you fit the same mould. But now we know you’re an Islamic scholar, we’ll have to take you more seriously. Couldn’t possibly tar you with the same brush as Greenwich Gal and her intellectual mommy’s club.

      • Inagua

“Stereotypes must be false to be stereotypes…”

I am not sure what point you are trying to make here, Chris, but this is an incorrect statement. All stereotypes are based on at least a partial truth or they wouldn’t make any sense. For example, the movie title White Men Can’t Jump makes sense because the stereotype is at least partially true. The NBA is not 80% Black because of affirmative action. The NBA is 80% Back because of a mostly accurate and mostly true stereotype, that White Men Can’t Jump (as proficiently as Black men can.) .

        • Well if it’s true then it’s a statement of fact. A stereotype, as I understand it, is a statement that applies what’s true about a small sample to an entire group. “Muslims are a peace-loving group of swell guys”, for example.

        • Inagua

“Well if it’s true then it’s a statement of fact.”

Now you are using JHR’s tactic of straw man argument, Chris. I didn’t say “all stereotypes are true” as you imply; I said that stereotypes “are based on at least a partial truth,” and gave an example of the “mostly true” stereotype of why the NBA is 80% Black.

          • I wasn’t disagreeing with you, Inagua, just clarifying my own thoughts. Stereotypes can indeed be accurate – most NBA players are indeed black, and all are men, so the stereotypical NBA player is a black man. A stereotype that oversimplifies is inaccurate, but otherwise, what’s the objection? The stereotypical Muslim, to me, is a bomb-tossing misanthrope set on the subjugation of the western world. Some may say that’s an oversimplification and therefore bad – seems to me to be adequate as a working hypothesis.

  8. “a republican small town boy” finally someone said something great about you…some accidents are better than others…

  9. Al Dente

I like the last one, about booty, hee hee! I may convert!

“Kill disbelievers wherever you find them. If they attack you, then kill them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. (But if they desist in their unbelief, then don’t kill them.)” 2:191-2

“War is ordained by Allah, and all Muslims must be willing to fight, whether they like it or not.” 2:216

“Apostates will be cursed by Allah, angels, and men. They will have a painful doom.” 3:86-88

“If you die fighting for Allah, you’ll be rewarded in heaven.” 3:157

“Those who die fighting for Allah will go to heaven.” 3:195

“Allah will bestow a vast reward on those who fight in religious wars.” 4:74

“Believers fight for Allah; disbelievers fight for the devil. So fight the minions of the devil.” 4:76

“Have no unbelieving friends. Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them.” 4:89

“If the unbelievers do not offer you peace, kill them wherever you find them.”

“Those that the Muslims killed were not really killed by them. It was Allah who did the killing.” 8:17

“Don’t let the disbelievers think they can escape. They are your enemy and the enemy of Allah.” 8:59-60

“Slay the idolaters wherever you find them.” 9:5

“If you refuse to fight, Allah will afflict you with a painful doom.” 9:39

“But if you’re willing to fight for Allah, he will provide you with lots of booty.” 48:19-20

This last quote sums up the credibility of your argument, and as the Governor suggests, says everything we need to know about Greenwich housewives.

  10. Greenwich Gal

Governor – I think you just got “schooled” by Al Dente!
And by the way – why all the hating on “housewives?” Did yours run away?

    • The Governor

You’re right, GG. I’ve been given a real education by Al Dente. Truly reflective of the Islamic religion and the belief of all Muslims. I’m surprised you didn’t come up with all of those quotes given how well informed you clearly are.

  11. Al Dente
Does your research indicate that was wrtitten in Chicago ?

  12. Al Dente

The Chicago version of the Koran actually refers to “poontang” not “booty” – and one may be spared a painful doom if he has paid his union dues and is a member in good standing.
