And the pressure grows

Jammie Wearing Fools on of my favorite blogs, links here, and my all time favorite, InstaPundit, links to Jammie Wearing Fools.

For all you new visitors, you should know that this blog is supposed to be a mixture of whatever interests me and a running report on what’s happening in the Greenwich real estate market, so come back next week and you’ll probably be disappointed. But for this week, there is no real estate activity and I was wondering how I’d fill the pages until on Christmas Eve, appropriately, the Journal News came out with its bright idea of exposing law-abiding gun owners and feeding that information to criminals and busybodies.

Oh, I do love fools.

Here’s what viewership’s looked like just a few minutes ago,  even before Jammie and the Professor provided their links. Thank you, Journal-News. Hope your past three days have been as much fun as mine.

Keep up the heat – and look who’s got the home address of Cyndee Royle, editor of the Journal-News?

Reader “Jeff” sends along a link to the latest article in the White Plains tabloid, Journal-News, reporting on the hornets nest occasioned by their publication of an interactive map showing the identity and address of all registered gun owners in Westchester County and surrounding areas.

Cyndee Royle

Cyndee Royle in better days, long ago and far way

Editor Cyndee Royle defends her decision and in fact sounds quite smug about it. Her paper is apparently still trying to obtain, and publish, information on how many guns, and their type, are registered to each owner, presumably to make shopping easier for gun thieves. Nothing more disappointing than getting a Remington 870 when you’ve been hoping for a Ruger Mini Thirty.

Let’s keep those cards and letters (and telephone calls, of course) coming.

Your comments may be delayed

Off to Pal Nancy’s for Christmas doings – Of the three kids, only Sarah made it home but John’s in Teluride and Kat’s in Hawaii, so it’s not them I’m feeling sorry for, but their parents. New commenters will find themselves in a que awaiting moderation, but I’ll get you up later in the day. By the way, a couple of weeks ago a reader wondered if a previous post on Cos Cob set a record for this blog with its 90 comments. I never looked – it probably did, or came close, but this business of the Journal-News publisher and her ill-advised attack on gun owners is up to something like 170 comments and still going. Ha.

Back up in a while, Merry Christmas, and thank you to everyone who contributes to this blog.

Well of course they do – important people send their children here

Sidwell Friends crossing guards

Sidwell Friends crossing guards

Sidwell Friends School (“Friends” being the pacifist “Quakers”, ironically enough) keeps eleven armed security guards on hand at all times, plus a Secret Service contingent when O’Bama’s kids are visiting from Hawaii. These guards, you understand, weren’t placed there after the First Family selected the school as the perfect place for Mushnut and Whatshername, they were there before and they’ll be there after – it’s standard operating procedure.

Who attends Sidwell? The children of our elected politicians – there’s not a child of this privileged class who attends Washington’s public schools – and those of the very media types who call the NRA a bunch of lunatics for suggesting we place armed guards in our schools. In this case, “little people” does not refer to size of the students but to us, the bitter clingers.

Back to real estate

Mortgage supplicant

Mortgage supplicant

Mortgage rates have hit a wall and probably aren’t going lower. So will they go higher next year? As is said, when something can’t continue, it won’t.

So we’ll see.

There are numerous, and complex, reasons for the difference. More volume, for example, is moving through an industry that has shrunk significantly. At the same time, banks today are scrutinizing property appraisals and loan files more closely—requiring reams of documentation of borrowers’ assets, to guard against the cost that they will be forced to buy back any defaulted mortgages from Fannie and Freddie. That means fewer underwriters are spending more time on every loan.

As a result, at a time when there are fewer people processing loans—mortgage banking employment has fallen by more than 50% from its peak in 2006—the amount of time it takes to process loans has gone up. Loan underwriters processed around 60 retail applications per month last year, compared to 190 applications per month in 2002, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

“The Federal Reserve is sitting there opening up the spigot as much as they can, and then you have someone at the other end of the hose squeezing it tighter and tighter, and a trickle gets through,” said Christopher Mayer, a Columbia Business School economist.

For a liberal who advocates confiscating other’s money, he sure vacations in nice spots

No, I’m not talking about O’Bama frolicking on the sands of Hawaii, or Bill Clinton relaxing at the 19th Hole up on the Vineyard, I’m noting that Henry Blodgett’s up in Litchfield County this Christmas. Have you priced second homes up there? I have, which is why I’m stuck here in Greenwich. It’s expensive up there!

It’s not necessarily about gun control but rather, criminal control

Or leave for Mexico

Or leave for Mexico

The twisted, evil man who ambushed and shot the four firemen up near Rochester yesterday was a felon (not allowed to own firearms of any sort, assault or otherwise):

Spengler was convicted of manslaughter in 1981 for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer, according to New York State Department of Corrections records. After prison [16 years] he spent eight years on parole.

The 19-year-old who shot and killed one man and wounded another in a Seattle nightclub last night on Christmas Eve was also a known entity:

Jones was convicted in 2009 of the high-profile, brutal beating death of ‘the Tuba Man,’ a beloved Seattle street musician. Because he was 16 at the time, he served less than 36 weeks in juvenile detention.

We can pass all the laws we like restricting guns (although I still think we should just pass a law prohibiting murder and assault and make our world safe from all harm) but we’ll not spare ourselves tragedy. So here’s a suggestion: if we can’t lock up the mentally ill, and civil rights considerations suggest that we shouldn’t, couldn’t we at least keep convicted murderers behind bars? It’d be a start.

Cat’s out of the bag

Give the people what they want and they’ll turn out every time. Nice work, Janet and your crowd, you got the publicity you wanted for your rag. This post isn’t very Christmasy, I realize, and I wish no ill towards any man or woman this day, so I’ll lay off now.

But sheesh.

Too funny: Journal News removes my disclosure of publisher Janet Hasson’s address

3 Gate House Lane (armory located second floor bedroom, right)

3 Gate House Lane (armory located second floor bedroom, right)

After reading the Journal-News’ courageous exposure of the home addresses of gun owners I strolled over to the comment section and replied to another reader’s inquiry as to the home address of the publisher by supplying that information (Janet Hanson, 3 Gate House Lane, Mamaroneck NY 10543 (248) 594-2197). Checking just now, I see that the paper has deleted my response.

Well isn’t that brave of them.

Did the Journal-News break the law by posting gun permit holders’ names?

By the way – received a phone call from a retired NYC detective whose name and address were among those released by these cretins. He’s now receiving death threats to himself and his family. It’s these very policemen, you idiots, who you’re counting on protecting you after you’ve disarmed the rest of the law abiding citizenry, and you’re exposing them to the deranged world of gun haters and sickos? Really dumb. Anyway, here’s what David provided – maybe one of the affected New York policemen would like to lodge a criminal complaint against Janet Hasson and Dwight Worley:

But addressing the point of the headline, here’s what reader David sent along:

Dwight or someone that gave him the information broke the law

So how does Journal – News reporter Dwight R. Worley rate a NYC pistol permit?

According to an Editor’s Note accompanying this reporter’s article revealing the home addresses of all licensed pistol owners, “Journal News reporter Dwight R. Worley owns a Smith & Wesson 686 .357 Magnum and has had a residence permit in New York City for that weapon since February 2011.” I’d heard pistol permits were impossible to obtain in New York City unless you were Donald Trump or a friend of the Mayor, but perhaps Dwight knows someone. In any event, should you wish to examine his 357, here’s where to view it:

Now they tell us

But I voted for Obama!

But I voted for Obama!

Expiration of Bush “tax cuts for the rich” which we’ve heard about ad nauseum for the past four years, will hurt poor and middle class the most. It’s never about the facts in our brave new world, only the narrative.

I say, bring it on.

Hell, even the gypsies get it

Due to EU rules change, 29 million Bulgarians, Romanians can move to England next year, and the gypsy population is gearing up to do so. But they recognize they’ll have to move fast, before the welfare state runs out of other people’s money. Says one gypsy, already ensconced in England with his wife and children, of the new wave of immigrants:

‘But there will be a day when your country is full up, when you cannot afford to give benefits to any more people from Europe and the rest of the world, too. They hope to get there before that moment happens.’

Sounds rather like our own country, except our “gypsies” are home-grown.

Obama doesn’t care about black children’s deaths, only “vanilla” school kids. That’s true of the media too. I’ve pointed out that neglect many times, but it’s more fun when a black professor says it.

Christmas in Hell

Soooo, you want to sit on my lap, do you?

Soooo, you want to sit on my lap, do you?

Day trip to Father Christmas’s Workshop in Finland strands hundreds of children and their parents

Hairdresser Michelle, who booked the trip through Canterbury Travel, said: ‘It was meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime fairytale trip, but it’s been awful.

‘Even the trip itself was disappointing. I thought Lapland was going to be magical, but it’s been a disaster.

‘We had to wait outside in minus 30 degrees in a queue to see Father Christmas and when it was finally the kids’ turn I fainted because I was so cold.

‘We were told we would be having snowball fights with elves, but the elves were moody and wouldn’t even talk to us.”
