West Virginia NEA chief: “My colleagues can’t chew gum and walk at the same time”

I do believe you’re in need of some after-school detention

West Virginia county is attempting to impose a dress code on its teachers but the union chief says it’d be impossible to teach and remember not to wear spandex shorts to school.

During that fracas, former West Virginia Education Association president Tom Lange argued that teachers can’t be expected to do their jobs competently and also dress respectably.

“It’s pretty tough to enforce and just another thing on people’s plates that they’ve got to try to deal with and they’ve got enough stuff to deal with and worry about,” Lange said.

From what I understand about West Virginia’s abysmal schools and the quality of its teachers, Mr. Lange probably has a point.

How hard to remember can a basic dress be? “Ladies”: don’t dress like a slut during school hours. “Gentlemen”: make sure your fly is zipped during class. Too hard I suppose.

Along that same vein, last year during my first visit to a hospital as a patient since 1991 I was somewhat taken aback by 1) an attractive (seemingly highly competent) 30-something technician who provided an ultrasound diagnostic test revealed, during the post-test results presentation, a metallic-looking bra style halter top under her lab coat and later 2) a 50-something lady-of-size who (again competently) showed me how to self-administer prescribed medication while her tight, low cut tank top provided “(much) too much information” about her mammary glands. Guess hospital employees can’t be expected do their technical jobs and also remember to not dress like horny housewives going to a Chippendale’s show.

Sure doesn’t look like any of my old teachers! I’m going back to her school!

I believe it’s illegal to walk and chew gum simultaneously. It is legal to smoke pot and do the tango, however.

All public schools should have a dress code that is more defined than the current policies at most schools for both the students and the faculty. Some of my most liberal friends are teachers and many of them have actually become pro uniform after witnessing how distracting free clothing choice can be.

I’ve counted a few teachers as friends over the past several years and have long disapproved of how casual their work wardrobe has become. It presents a lazy, sloppy example to those whose lives they are shaping. But, hey, go to any suburban mall and 90% of the shoppers are dressed like they’re homeless.
