Reader “Jeff” sends along a link to the latest article in the White Plains tabloid, Journal-News, reporting on the hornets nest occasioned by their publication of an interactive map showing the identity and address of all registered gun owners in Westchester County and surrounding areas.

Editor Cyndee Royle defends her decision and in fact sounds quite smug about it. Her paper is apparently still trying to obtain, and publish, information on how many guns, and their type, are registered to each owner, presumably to make shopping easier for gun thieves. Nothing more disappointing than getting a Remington 870 when you’ve been hoping for a Ruger Mini Thirty.

I would think that the neighbor of gun owners should be nervous, as their relative risk of targeting by criminals has gone up, assuming the criminals look at the map and chose to avoid the homes of gun owners as being too dangerous.
Or maybe thieves target a home to steal guns will figure that as long as in the neighborhood ….

All they have to do is drive around and match the map with an excess of newspapers on a driveway. I doubt that criminals are reading this blog for advise, but it truly is that simple.

In the “old” days of journalism, the editorial staff would meet once a week for a weekly paper to discuss articles and assignments. Occasionally legal counsel was sought if there was a particularly contentious issue highlighted by the paper. Do editors not do that anymore? Maybe they feel they’re above the law. Well..we’ve got news — I was able to send the publisher a tweet before she locked her twitter account. Just reminded her to obtain the services of a good lawyer. She and her paper are going to get their asses sued first time there’s a robbery, burglary, home invasion….you get the point…from that list.

I live in Alaska. Up here we don’t really worry about the paper providing such a list. It would be useless information. If you are dumb enough to break into a house you probably have a 80% chance of the owner having multiple firearms (and we know how to use them). Getting shot by the owner or a neighbor greatly reduces burglary attempts.

Ball: “Asinine Journal News Editors treat sex offenders better than law abiding gun owners”
Brewster, N.Y. – 12/26/2012 – Today Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I) called for the Journal News Newspaper, a Gannett Company, to immediately remove a map they have posted on their website that unethically reveals homeowners with pistol permits in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties. The Journal News says that the information contained in the map was obtained by submitting Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of pistol permit holders by county. Senator Ball has now announced that he will introduce legislation in the New York State Senate, to prevent this from happening again.
“The asinine editors at the Journal News, have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region. The immediate elimination of the information posted on the Journal News Website is the only way we can ensure the safety and liberty of these New Yorkers. This is clearly a violation of privacy, and needs to be corrected immediately. The same elitist egg heads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law abiding citizens like level three sexual predators. Am I surprised? No. Should every person with commonsense be offended? Yes. Furthermore, the Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” said Ball. “Publishing this information on a website provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes. Preventing the theft of guns and their criminal misuse is an important public-policy goal. This map is bad for the good guys and good for the bad guys.”
In the Assembly Ball multi-sponsored Assembly bill 820, legislation which would prohibit the public disclosure of information in an application for a pistol license with exceptions for prosecutors and police conducting an active investigation. Senator Ball will be introducing similar legislation, immediately. The bill would protect lawful gun owners from being targeted by thieves for firearm burglaries and eliminate a database criminals could use to extort their identity-theft victims.

You don’t have to be a gun owner to know that what this CynDee Royal did was not only unethical, but illegal! The editor had balls? And yet, Dwight Worley, the writer of this article (who owns a .357) thought he should be exempt from his little map. For all the “targets” he made out of law-abiding citizens, apparently he doesn’t feel he should be one. Look up his address on that map. You won’t find a dot for him. Ask yourself why. I don’t think the answer involves the possession of balls. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s quite the opposite.

I am so glad that someone finally hit the media back where it hurts. Especially how much they have been hurting US. I found Royle’s article especially upsetting b/c she included NYC Police Officers in her publication. I find her actions not only appalling, but extremely unethical & dangerous; on a personal note, I have family that are/were NYC Police Officers and she listed them in her publication. I truly believe the only way people like her will ever learn the harm that they do (for the sake of sales & ideologies) to others, is to give them a dose of their own medicine. And that is all that was done here today, CynDee Royle & company got EXACTLY what they dished out. And for those of you who find this appalling, you are all hypocrites, It is/was NOT Cyndee Royle’s job to list the addresses of all legal, registered gun owners in several NY Counties; she did this to spread her own ideologies & for sales purposes only and it backfired on her. Remember everyone, this data base is of persons who hold a current concealed carry permit. It does not include people who own legal firearms but do not have permits. Cyndee was denied information on gun owners as it is against federal law to compile, store or list any information on individual gun owners as it is seen as a hindrance to our Second Amendment. It is a very good bet that many homes not listed in these areas have legal long guns or handguns that have not chosen to get a carry permit. Hopefully they will now.
